Just finished HORRORSTOR by Grady Hendrix … the first of his books that I have read.
I love the high concept nature of the book, the cover is modelled after an IKEA catalogue and the insertion of further adverts for IKEA-like equipment and product as it progresses … ending up with instruments of torture with faux Scandinavian names!
The text is well written and thankfully lives up to the concept … we’re with Amy who works at an IKEA like store called Orsk … it’s a soulless place designed to entrap and sell things to unwary shoppers … but it’s also built on the site of an old prison …
And thus the scene is set for a long night of horror as the management decide to post staff overnight after various break ins and defilement of the goods … but after dark the nature of the store seems to change …
In many ways this is a very traditional take on the horror novel … small group of people trapped in a store overnight as all manner of horrors break forth … Hendrix does it well and the book stands alongside similar tales by Christopher Fowler (Breathe) and John Llewelyn Probert (Dead Shift)…
I enjoyed the horror elements and what Amy and her coworkers are put through is imaginative and effective … plus all the random references to invented Scandinavian named furniture pieces made me smile
It’s a solid and enjoyable read … and a good primer (hopefully) for Hendrix’s other work …
