I checked out the new Sci-Fi movie, The Creator, from director Gareth Edwards.
Writer/director Gareth Edwards (Rogue One, Godzilla) has brought us an epic sci-fi action thriller set amidst a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence. Joshua (John David Washington), a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife (Gemma Chan), is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war… and mankind itself. Joshua and his team of elite operatives journey across enemy lines, into the dark heart of AI-occupied territory… only to discover the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child (Madeleine Yuna Voyles).
The trailer for The Creator is something that gave me an idea of what I was going to see in the movie, but when it came to seeing the movie in its entirety it is so much more than you would first expect. The imagery of The Creator looks stunning on the big screen with some truly amazing CGI from Industrial Light & Magic.
It’s not just the A.I. characters that look amazing with their electrical parts, it’s also the backgrounds of the cityscapes and futuristic buildings of the A.I. camps that are a real joy to see. I often found myself thinking of the likes of Apocalypse Now and Platoon while watching the movie, maybe this was down to the scenes with American troops attacking the AI villages, but it really makes you think if we are heading in the direction the movie went with the AI that is becoming more and more powerful today.
Right from the start of the movie, I found myself getting pulled into the story and visuals, I also found myself enjoying the cast that had been chosen for the various roles. The relationship that is built between Jousua (Washington) and Alphie (Voyles) works so well and you feel for both of them and the fight that they must go through to save not only the AI but also humanity itself.
The Creator is Voyles’ feature debut and she was great in her role, certainly, someone to watch out for in the near future and I hope that she brings us more.
Gareth Edwards has not only brought us a thought-provoking and stunning-looking movie but he has also managed to bring in Hans Zimmer to produce yet another amazing soundtrack, which just blew me away. I even sat through the end credits to listen to the music and enjoy Zimmer’s superb talent.
The runtime went by quickly and the 2h 13m just shot by as I enjoyed every minute of The Creator, OK this is not going to be a release for everyone but the Secret Screening at Cineworld was one of a few that had very few walkouts. I think it was about two people, but maybe they were leaving for a bus as they did leave almost towards the end.
